M6 Construction Resumes while Protecting Taxpayers

Transport for NSW has reached an agreement with the M6 contractor, CGU, to recommence work on the M6 project. CGU has agreed to immediately resume work under the terms of the original contract, and not to pursue contractual claims against the NSW Government for costs related to the two sinkholes that occured in 2024.

This agreement delivers for Rockdale, ensuring construction is completed as soon as possible without costing the taxpayer extra money and ensuring the benefits of the project flow back into the community.

The agreement is a great outcome for our community, getting the project moving again for the first time since CGU walked of the job in early 2025. Around 90% of the tunneling for the project has already been completed.

The original M6 contract, entered into by the former Liberal-National Government in 2021, left taxpayers vulnerable to being exploited by contractors seeking a blank check from the NSW Government. Since coming to office, the Minns Labor Government has spent every day working to secure the best deal for taxpayers.

While the delay in construction is regrettable, this agreement ends the threat of walk-offs or termination, putting the interests of taxpayers, motorists, and residents first.

Transport for NSW will provide an update on the expected completion timeline in due course. CGU have agreed to seek to optimise this delivery further as they remobilise to site over coming weeks.

Working with Premier Chris Minns, we’re fighting to deliver this critical infrastructure project while supporting residents and businesses impacted by the construction. This agreement will get the M6 project back on track while protecting the interests of NSW Taxpayers.
