Small Number, Big Impact: The Drivers Disrupting Rockdale
People across Rockdale are fed up with hooning, excessive vehicle noise, and anti-social driving especially late at night and on weekends. It’s disrupting sleep, impacting safety, and chipping away at the liveability of our community.
The Minns Labor Government has delivered on its election promise to undertake a trial of this groundbreaking technology, to ensure we are investigating every potential solution to this issue.
The collected data is already proving useful, and highlights the innovative work NSW Police, Transport for NSW and the EPA are undertaking.
The Minns Labor Government and the EPA are continuing to review the data and are undertaking additional analysis, including a cost-benefit review, and will provide further recommendations once all of the data has been assessed.
We’re listening to community concerns and taking them seriously.
The noise detection camera findings reveal:
-
More than 7.7 million vehicles were recorded passing through these locations, with 3,559 noise events detected.
-
Of these, 44% were directly linked to specific vehicles or driving behaviour.
-
Noise spikes happen most often at night and on weekends, driven by aggressive acceleration and hooning behaviour.
-
Motorbikes were responsible for 85% of the noise events despite making up only a small fraction of vehicles on the road.
-
Even more concerning, a small number of repeat offenders are causing most of the disruption, with 55% of incidents linked to the same vehicles.
This isn’t about a majority of drivers, it’s about a handful of people doing the wrong thing and impacting thousands of residents.
While the findings are reviewed and the data continues to be assessed, residents are encouraged to continue reporting noisy vehicles to the EPA Environment Line on 131 555, and any dangerous or hoon driving behaviour to Crime Stoppers.
Reducing noise impacts is important, and your feedback helps guide this work.
I will continue pushing for stronger action to ensure our streets are safer, quieter, and more liveable for everyone.
